* Queen Victoria had a dog named “Looty” that was stolen from China by a British soldier while looting a palace in Peking in 1860.
* Humans have pumped so much groundwater out of the ground that it’s changed the tilt of the Earth’s axis 31.5 inches to the east.

* A decision was made to discontinue digging… and commence burying. The latter job had never been properly completed either and that was how, two decades later, a few kids from all over the world got to sail on a makeshift raft of Styrofoam in an enormous ditch filled with rainwater.
* Communism had always relied on teleology for its existence, but now the frontier had been closed. It was as if time itself had stopped moving forward and had entered a cyclical almost medieval agricultural pattern: winter, spring, summer, autumn; winter, spring, summer, autumn; 10th Congress of the Party, 11th Congress of the Party, 12th Congress of the Party, 13th Congress of the Party.
* The highly repressive functions of the totalitarian machinery disappeared, but money was no worse an instrument of control, perhaps even a better one because more refined and insidious.
* the American frontier Frederick Jackson Turner, “coarseness and strength combined with acuteness and inquisitiveness; that practical, inventive turn of mind, quick to find expedients; that masterful grasp of material things, lacking in the artistic but powerful to effect great ends; that restless, nervous energy; that dominant individualism, working for good and for evil, and withal that buoyancy and exuberance which comes with freedom.”
* Like Communism, capitalism is a teleological system at its root, relying on a narrative of progress, on a forward-moving vector of time, but when that time turns cyclical, repetitive, without a clear direction, the system begins to disintegrate, not under the weight of its own contradictions, as Marx would tell us, but under the weight of its own uniformity.

* dutiful tick marks next to frequently occurring answers, in the stocky, diligent handwriting of an engineer—they seemed like flash cards for a fun-house citizenship exam.
* Nabokov’s fiction brims with anagrammatic avatars of the author: Vivian Darkbloom (from “Lolita”), Adam von Librikov (“Transparent Things”), Bladvak Vinomori (“King, Queen, Knave”), Baron Klim Avidov (“Ada, or Ardor”). Immigration is an occasion for “self-renaming,” exposing, as one of Nabokov’s characters notices, the fact that all names—the ones we come into the world with and the ones we make a new world with—are formed from the same set of letters;
* the ultimate ideogram for the hybrid crossworder-novelist-migrant: the half-finished puzzle, always anagramming, escaping and assimilating at the same time.

* Lately, Choquette says, the division has been focusing on biopharmaceuticals, and working on NIST’s first SRM for a living material: a Chinese hamster ovary cell line.
* “We’ve dematerialized all of our units,” said Leon Chao, a NIST researcher. “Now all of our measurements are derived from universal constants.”
* For GPS to work, it needs ultra-exact timing: accuracy within fifteen meters requires precision on the order of fifty nanoseconds.
* “A clock accurate to a second over the age of the cosmos,” Patrick Gill, a physicist at the U.K.’s National Physical Laboratory, is quoted as saying in New Scientist, “would allow tests of whether physical laws and constants have varied over the universe’s history.”
* Accuracy, in measuring the kilogram or the second, is perhaps less about knowing you are right than about having an achingly exact understanding of how often you are likely to be wrong.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/01/07/the-american-boy :
* Socrates, faced with an earnest, if pretentious, student, resorts to “teasing him out of his pomposities”—as canny a characterization of what it’s like to teach freshmen as any I know of.
* (Sweetman, in his biography, relates how a young actor had written to her, offering to have “the operation” if it meant getting the part. “That,” she wrote back to him, “would be gelding the lily.”)
* “If characters have come to life,” she once wrote, “one should know how they will make love; if not it doesn’t matter. Inch-by-inch physical descriptions are the ketchup of the literary cuisine, only required by the insipid dish or by the diner without a palate.”
* The writers we absorb when we’re young bind us to them, sometimes lightly, sometimes with iron. In time, the bonds fall away, but if you look very closely you can sometimes make out the pale white groove of a faded scar, or the telltale chalky red of old rust.

* Of course, as so often with Wallace, on actual investigation this turns out not to be true. The fact withdraws itself, and only the epiphany remains.
* Poured out that peculiar quantum, my readerly goodwill. I thought, what is it exactly? He makes people feel they are in real possession of the word ‘volute’, that their vast untapped icebergs of vocabulary and perceptual detritus are readily available to them. His entire personality is present in the word ‘supposedly’ – it is actually frightening.
* Every so often Wallace offers you a set piece that’s as fully articulated as a Body Worlds exhibit – laminated muscles pinwheeling through the air, beads of plasticine sweat flying – or pauses the action to deliver a weather bulletin that approaches the sublime.
* ‘Since we all breathe, all the time,’ he writes at the end of The Pale King, ‘it is amazing what happens when someone else directs you how and when to breathe.’ The novel does this, as much as any hypnotist. The rhythms of another person’s sentences do this, wind across the grid, Illinois, their attempts to keep their mother alive for all time by reproducing her idiom down to the letter.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/01/07/the-american-boy :
