* a well-known magazine editor who serialized many of Mansouri’s translations, estimates that throughout most of his career, he submitted up to one hundred and forty thousand words per month to his various magazine editors. Given that Mansouri was an active translator for almost sixty years, fourteen hundred books is not an entirely implausible claim.
* But by contemporary standards, the most popular translator in the history of Iran translated hardly anything at all. Most of his works are a hodgepodge of source text mixed with his own additions and musings,
* He wrote on lined paper, cut in half because this allowed him to write across the width of the paper without lifting his wrist and enabled him to move his hand in only a vertical direction, another ergonomic strategy.
* Mansouri cavalierly expands and waters down Nabokov’s painstakingly constructed sentences, explaining everything without even bothering to fact-check his own explanations. His goal here seems to have been to make the text accessible to all of his readers
* his version of The Three Musketeers, which is some six hundred pages long in the original French, weighs in at more than six thousand pages,
* “Is Mr. Corbin alive?” Mansouri asked, visibly shocked.
“Of course he is. Didn’t you know that?”
“I wish you told him that Zabihollah Mansouri is dead.”
* Many of these places employed a naqal, who would show up in the evening to entertain the crowds with adaptations of the ancient epic.

While we are on the subject of nature, here is an entire paragraph, one of two about lightning in the story:
>> It’s monsoon season, and lightning bobs and weaves in the corner of your eyes all day like floaters. There are three separate storms to the south, delicately wind-tilted on the horizon. Lightning races them in a stitchless thread, and to the north rain shimmers through the sheerest rainbow, stamped perfectly horizontal against the mountains like the execution line on a document.
This is a 172-car pileup of mixed visual metaphors. What is the damn lightning (which bobs and weaves like a ... a floater) doing, racing the storms? Are you sure that it is racing them? It is racing them ... in a thread? A thread without stitches? Buddy, what the fuck is happening in the sky right now.
Well, see, over here, to the south, you got a thread. It lacks stitches. And boy, that thread is really hauling ass. In this sense, it will remind you of a floater. And then if you'll turn around and look over there to the north, you got your classic execution line on a document, the only way that the concept of straightness could be represented for the reader.
Hey man, I'm having a hard time picturing this "rainbow" thing you mentioned seeing. Oh, well, just picture the black line where you sign your name on a DMV form, that's basically it. OK, got it.
This manages to be simultaneously deranged and also not visually evocative in the least. It's like somebody sniffed glue and hallucinated the normal contents of a desk drawer.

https://news.qq.com/rain/a/20241106A0453E00

https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/what-we-talk-about-when-we-talk-about-translation/
* All of these anxieties are compounded by the fact that translation is a profoundly strange and often counterintuitive art. It’s also perhaps the only art that can be not just bad, but wrong, and will never not be flawed.
* no two languages’ grammars match, their vocabularies diverge, even punctuation has a different weight — there can be no such thing as a translation that is not “creative.”
* Literary style is not simply a mark of identity, like a fingerprint — it also has a function and a significance.
* Translating from Korean into English involves moving from a language more accommodating of ambiguity, repetition, and plain prose, to one that favors precision, concision, and lyricism.
* Because each author’s individual style distinguishes itself by the degree to which it diverges from this middle ground, and because the significance of style is therefore inextricable from language, translating it seems impossible. What we can do, at least, is to recognize that the “pole” of what registers as, for example, repetition or poetic prose is set at different heights in the source and target languages
* Some people tell me I ought to be proud, but to be honest I’m happy to feel conflicted — such an attitude is more useful for those of us in positions of privilege, encouraging us to act responsibly and generously towards texts, authors, and other translators.
* It’s this combination of low wages justified by dismissal of creativity and an insistence on “humility” that means translation is often spoken of as a feminized profession.

https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/kXIEUQSO1H7nUgV2eoKTDg

* Solar polysilicon is simply the poor cousin of the stuff computer chips are made from: While impurities of one part in 100 million are considered acceptable for solar panels, microprocessors need to be pure to as much as one part in 10 trillion.
* Since 2005, annual installations of solar panels have increased at an average annual rate of about 44%. This year, the capacity of new modules installed globally every three days is roughly equivalent to what existed in the entire world at the end of 2005.

* A separate WTO panel in 2014 found the US antidumping decision resulting from Asbeck’s complaint went against the trade body’s own rules.
* China’s support for solar developers is so unwavering, in part, because — unlike the US (which is currently pumping more oil and gas than any nation in history) — it’s desperately short of domestic energy sources,
* Successive waves of tariffs have done little more than create a Potemkin solar industry, while putting a tax on clean power as the climate crisis festers. The US installed about half as many solar panels in 2023 as the European Union

* Modern agriculture in America can look like a gambling career with a gardening hobby.
* The most reliable farm income often comes from not growing things, or subsidies for growing things that other people are already growing too much of: government insurance against bad weather, price floors for surplus commodities, payments to leave land fallow, cash for not using water.
* But that would involve changing the results at weather stations spread out over thousands of square miles in Colorado and Kansas. And it would mean no field staff had discovered the damage until cumulative readings from tampered gauges fell well below seasonal averages.
* Because the whistleblower case was successful, and despite the criminal indictment of Fox that was dismissed after his death, Fox’s estate received $500,000 of the federal settlement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
* But the southeastern Colorado rain gauge massacre remains an outlier even in the rich history of defrauding taxpayers.

* Penfield spent a considerable amount of time, he told me, depressed that no one would hear him, not even a mediocre geologist whose reputation hinged on this very information. He named the crater Chicxulub specifically “to give the academics and NASA naysayers a challenging time pronouncing it after a decade of their dismissals.”
* The surface of the planet grew hot as an oven set to broil. T. rex, triceratops: These were not creatures designed to hide. A layer of iridium settled over the globe, to be buried by millions of years of sediment and discovered by Jan Smit 66 million years and a few weeks too late.
* If many people, in discussing Robert DePalma’s sartorial choices, will feel the need to explain that Indiana Jones was not even a paleontologist (he was an archaeologist),
* Camels would evolve right here on the plains, and American lions bigger than African ones. The species that took it upon itself to figure it all out, to make a story of the past, would largely overlook these creatures in favor of T. rex and triceratops. The species would construct elaborate rules that govern who may and may not tread on particular pieces of land. It would evolve a complex economy of prestige to accompany the discovery of truths about all that had come before — a shadowy interplay of gatekeeping, mentorship, and recognition. There would be reason for everyone, on every side of a small discovery of a single fact, to feel overlooked and underappreciated, awake to the vastness of time and vulnerable to the smallest slight.

* There was the direct load of the overhead stone, of course, but also the winds. (To estimate the winds in the 12th century, he found anemometer readings in rural France going back a century. Not perfect, but good enough.) He placed his fully loaded plastic model in an oven, where it was subjected not just to heat but also light. Warmed, the plastic model revealed its stresses, sort of like the way an MRI reveals damage to soft human tissue.
* Married couples learned to settle their arguments before the husband returned to the mine, because they might never see each other again.
* There was a reason no one could agree on coal pillar formulas: No one could agree how to measure the rock the pillars needed to support.
* From the moment we left the interstate, we were on narrow back roads winding through towns half-populated by people with a talent for throwing leery glances at strangers.
* “They had all this data but weren’t doing much with it,” said Chris. The phenomenon had also occurred in baseball and, I’d bet, in other fields, too.
* a crude method for work crews to determine if some rock would work as a road: whacking it with a ball-peen hammer. Oddly, it didn’t matter how hard you whacked it. There were just a handful of ways the rock might react, and its specific reaction revealed its strength.
* sure enough, the direction of the horizontal stress in coal mines lined up exactly with the definitive plate tectonics stress map that had been created in the 1970s.
* The point of the roof bolt story was that, left to itself, the free market would fail to protect ordinary workers — even when it clearly had the wherewithal to do so.

* I realized that any discipline of regional studies is bound to acquire some characteristics of both the moment and the place. I had gone to China during an era of pragmatism and relative openness, qualities that also influenced the field of sinology at that time. But Egypt in the 2010s was very different. The Middle East was troubled, with a long history of ignorance on the part of Westerners, and the Iraq War and other misguided foreign interventions had left people wary. It wasn’t surprising that scholars and others had little patience for outside perspectives.
* In that respect, we had entered the age of the sideline sinologists: the experts who hadn’t lived in China for years and in some cases couldn’t return at all.
* I sometimes sensed that China’s later success only made foreigners more upset about the country’s early mistakes. This pattern reflected the zero-sum mindset that had contaminated so much thinking about China.
* The next day, she sent me an email. Her message reminded me that few things in China are as heartbreaking as the patience of the young: --I will write about this “forbidden” topic 30 years later when things are better. I have an outline that I really like.
* n that regard, the transformation at the individual level runs directly against the grain of what’s happened with the political system. This is by no means a guarantee of change—systems have a way of overwhelming individual talent and decency. But between these two dynamics is an underlying tension, and within that tension lies hope.

https://socratesonthebeach.com/xiao-yue-shan :
* She looks at him, and decades of cinema, of longing, of lying yourself into the truth—which is the actor’s vocation—passes between them,
* Henry James: “relations stop nowhere, and the exquisite problem of the author is eternally but to draw, by a geometry of his own, the circle within which they shall happily appear to do so.”.. we must always honour the centre and its gravity, the structural integrity of a duration rounded off from the chaos of time.
* the definitive quality by which these two countries coalesced in my mind was that, within their boundaries, there reigned a fierce, opulent pride.... It was this sense of not loving or hating your nation, but being inextricable from it, that raised the mirror between these two dazzling arenas. This, and the fact that this pride ruled alongside another monarch, equally as omnipotent but much less discernible—and that figure was silence.
* Just as in chiaroscuro, darkness ripens the volume of light.
* '...In Italy no one can afford to delude himself. . . The lower his condition the more vulnerable he is and the quicker he must recognise the real rules governing life in order not to prosper but merely to survive. .. Few Italians can avoid learning them, however, as they are taught by fear, humiliation, deception, and defeat.'
* The building, unchanged, will no longer recognise that what survives is not itself, but the illusive disorientation of always.
* These buildings are the ultimate indulgence: beautiful and spacious, rich in insinuated antiquity, yet unmistakably contemporary. They pay tribute to the past by underscoring its annihilation. They love history because it is long and far and mutable, and destruction is imprinted in its very conception.
* I’ve learned that every country one travels to will always be a site of mourning for one’s first country.
* I carved the transcript of my story into the unwritten, a thin thread of light chiselling at shadows. Because I had inherited a vast legacy of silence, because silence was my country, I had to build a wall to see its borders.

* China’s support for solar developers is so unwavering, in part, because — unlike the US (which is currently pumping more oil and gas than any nation in history) — it’s desperately short of domestic energy sources,
